I started building web sites in 1995 hand coding html. It wasn’t really designing back then but as html grew more flexible "designing" web sites became a necessity. I went to school at Utah State University and studied graphic design. I started a business in 1997 with three other partners that didn’t work out. One of the partners and myself started our own business "Harcourt & Walter DeZign" that went very well but with 2 kids & school I took a job with a printer as a pre-press supervisor to bring in a steady flow of cash.
I helped to initiate a Agfa Apogee DTP workflow program. That went fairly well but I was putting in 50+ hours a week at work and full time school, I had to quit the job because I was doing poorly in school.
After I finished my last semester at school, I got a job at an AlphaGraphics in Salt Lake City as a graphic designer / pre-press specialist. I enjoyed it very much. I took a job with AlphaGraphics but after a year with AlphaGraphics I got a job with JP Realty in Salt Lake City as a Graphic Designer. It was a dream job! I helped startup the new "web initiative" for all 18 of JP Realty’s malls throughout the west. I designed pop up windows for the monthly mall promotions. I also designed all the posters for the malls. All were large format. The smallest being 22"x28", the largest, (a 3 tier design) 42"x84".
It was a great job but alas, it came to an end when JP Realty was aquired by General Growth Properties. Everything I did was handled by a firm that handled their account nationwide and my position was eliminated. I worked at HealthInsight, a government Medicaid/Medicare agency until I decided to work full time at my own business, Jerry Walter Graphic DeZign.
I was employed at Media One (Newspaper Agency Corp.) as a Senior Graphic Designer since 12/2005 until 08/2010 when the company decided to outsource many jobs to India. My duties included magazine layout and design, ad design. Production Manager for Hometown Values Magazine a monthly publication that is received in 188,000 households throughout the state of Utah. IT for the writer’s and designer’s Macs and network.
I have learned a lot in my short span of designing and I feel I have a lot to offer between my web and print experience.
